Keyword Research for AEO: Finding What AI Search Cites

AEO keyword research means researching the full questions people ask AI systems, and the smaller sub-questions hidden inside them, instead of chasing single search terms. It replaces the old goal of ranking with a new one: getting quoted inside the answer.

Now, roughly 60% of Google searches already end without a click, and that climbs to 83% when an AI Overview shows up and 93% inside Google’s AI Mode, according to SparkToro and Semrush data compiled by SERPs.io. The traffic that does still come through is worth more per visit: one large-scale study of B2B referral data found AI-referred visitors converting at 14.2%, against 2.8% for organic search, per Opollo’s 2026 AI Search Benchmark Report. Fewer visits, higher intent, and the only way in is getting cited.

What is the difference between traditional keyword research and AEO keyword research?

Search volume still tells you whether a topic is worth writing about, and it still belongs in your titles and headers. It just stops being the whole research process.

How do short-tail and long-tail keywords work in AI search?

Short-tail keywords still tell an AI system what category your site belongs to, while long-tail keywords now double as the literal sentences people type into ChatGPT and Perplexity.

Pelvic floor PT” or “postpartum dietitian” are short-tail terms, still worth using in page titles and headers so both Google and the AI crawlers can categorize the page correctly. The long-tail version, something closer to “why does my pelvic floor PT keep asking about my C-section,” used to just be a low-competition phrase. Now it’s close to the exact sentence a real person would type into an AI system, which makes it more valuable.

What happens behind the scenes when someone asks AI a question?

Query fan-out means an AI system breaks one question into several smaller searches behind the scenes, so a page that only answers the surface question (and ignores the pieces underneath) it gets skipped during citation selection.

Take that C-section example. Behind that single question, an AI system is likely running separate searches on:

  • Pelvic floor dysfunction after a C-section
  • Scar tissue and pelvic floor function
  • Diastasis recti screening
  • Typical postpartum PT timelines

A page that answers only the first bullet and ignores the rest is the kind of page that gets left out of the final answer. Instead of picking one keyword and writing a page around it, you’re mapping the full set of sub-questions a real question fans out into, then building a page or small cluster that covers all of them. One well-covered topic cluster will out-cite five thin, single-keyword posts.

Where can you find the questions AI search engines use?

The questions people ask AI systems come from four sources: Google Search Console, incognito autocomplete, your own client conversations, and the community platforms AI systems already treat as authoritative.

Google Search Console. Open the Performance report, filter to Queries, and scan for anything phrased as a question, anything long and conversational, or anything with “vs,” “best,” or “near me” in it. These are the questions closest to how people talk to AI systems. If you want to filter faster, ask Claude or ChatGPT to write a regex pattern for “queries that start with a question word” or “queries with ten or more words,” paste it into a custom Search Console filter, and export what comes back.

Autocomplete, in a private browser window. Type a seed phrase like “why does my pelvic floor” into Google, Bing, and ChatGPT’s search, incognito, so your own history doesn’t skew the suggestions.

The questions your clients actually ask you. The exact phrasing a client used on an intake call, or the question three different patients asked in the same consult, is language that’s a great place to start using in your keyword research.

Reddit and YouTube. Both platforms function as source material for the AI systems themselves, not just competitors for attention. Reddit alone accounts for roughly 44% of Google AI Overviews’ social citations and around 24% of Perplexity’s citations as of early 2026, per Tinuiti data reported by CMSWire. YouTube holds a meaningful share too, showing up in roughly 16% of Perplexity’s top-cited sources, per Bluefish and Tinuiti data compiled by PikaSEO. Search relevant subreddits (r/PelvicFloor, local parenting groups, condition-specific communities) for the exact wording people use when nobody’s optimizing anything, and consider answering your most-asked question in a short, transcribed video instead of only a blog post.

How do you structure a page to get cited by Generative AI?

Structure the page so a 20 to 30 word direct answer sits immediately under a question-phrased H2, before any context, and name the actual subject in every paragraph instead of using pronouns.

If someone asks “does insurance cover pelvic floor PT,” the sentence right after that heading should answer it, not lead into it. Everything else in the section can build on that answer, but the answer itself has to stand alone, because AI systems chunk pages into pieces before reading them, and a pronoun that made sense three paragraphs up means nothing once it’s been pulled out of context.

Back up specific claims with something concrete. A percentage, a timeframe, a named source. “Most patients see improvement within a few sessions” gets skipped over. “Most patients report symptom improvement within four to six sessions” gives an AI system something it can actually extract and trust. This isn’t a stylistic preference: the Princeton study that introduced the term Generative Engine Optimization tested nine different content strategies across 10,000 real queries and found that adding citations and statistics boosted a page’s visibility in AI-generated answers by up to 40%, while keyword stuffing ranked dead last of all nine (Aggarwal et al., arXiv:2311.09735). A remote staffing company called 1840 & Co. used a version of this approach on a single restructured page and went from 0% AI visibility to an 11% share in their category within a month (Profound case study).

FAQ

Do I still need a keyword research tool for AEO? Yes, but for a different reason. Use it to confirm a topic has real search demand and to find the terms worth putting in titles and headers. The conversational, multi-part questions won’t come from the tool itself.

How many sub-questions should one page cover? Enough to answer the topic fully without padding. For the C-section example above, four or five closely related sub-questions in one well-organized page will outperform four or five separate thin posts.

Should I be posting on Reddit for this to work? Not necessarily posting, but you should be reading. Reddit threads are a source AI systems already pull from directly, so the exact phrasing in an active thread on your topic is worth mining even if you never post there yourself.

Does this replace traditional SEO? No. Ranking in Google still drives traffic, and a lot of what makes a page rankable (clear structure, real answers, decent page speed) also makes it more citable. AEO adds a second layer on top, it doesn’t remove the first one.

Can I use the same keyword research for a service page and a blog post? The seed questions can overlap, but the depth shouldn’t. A service page needs one clear answer per question. A blog post has room to cover the full cluster of sub-questions underneath it.
